Ross is speaking directly to his students ideals. Who doesn't want to be a success..... well, no one. Most people have something they're good at, something they want to accomplish..... whether it's winning the football game on Saturday or writing the next, best novel. Success breeds power, even if that power only extends to the ability to write the next book or to know you're starting in the next game. The last part of your question calls for your opinion.
