Comment on Mr. Ross. What do we learn about him, and why did he start the experiment?

Mr. Ross began the experiment in order to engage his students..... it was an experiment designed to get their attention and increase class participation. From this, we can infer that Mr. Ross is a newer teacher, who is willing to go beyond the norm in order to instruct his students. We also see evidence of his inexperience as he is drawn into his own lesson.
