Ettie and Birdy leave for California. She later dies in the United States.
From Chicago he went under a changed name to California, and it was there that the light went for a time out of his life when Ettie Edwards died.

Ettie dies at the end of the play by a disease.
"I've simply to mention that,once he revealed his true identity as a Pinkerton detective,the railroad sent a special train to collect him and his bride-to-be,Miss Ettie Shafter,that very night"."At least they had some time together as a reward,before she was taken by disease".
