In Act 2, we find out that the dead body in Birlstone Manor is actually of Ted Baldwin, a member of The Ancient Order of Freemen, and that Mr.Douglas is actually alive. In Act 2 Scene 11, John Douglas dictates the events of the night Ted Baldwin was murdered:
"After the bridge was up, I put the thing clear out of my head. I never figured on his getting into the house and waiting for me. But when I made my round later, I scented danger as soon as I entered the study. I saw a boot under the window curtain. At once, I put the candle down. I'd left a hammer in here earlier, I moved towards it. He sprang at me. I lashed him with the hammer and I got him. He dodged round the table like an eel and a moment later — I heard him cock the gun, but got hold of it before he could fire. We wrestled for a minute or more. It was death to the man who lost his grip. Maybe it was I who pulled the trigger. Maybe we just jolted it off between us. Anyhow, he got both barrels in the face. His own mother wouldn't have recognized him."
Clearly, Mr.Douglas killed Baldwin to avoid being killed. The kill was completely accidental, as Mr.Douglas had no intentions of killing Baldwin. Mr.Douglas went into hiding after this because he was not sure what the punishment was for self-defense murder in Britain.
