Explain the irony of having the smaller girl on the train recite a line "On the Road to Mandalay"?

The little girl only knew one line of Kipling's poem, which she recited over and over again. She caught the attention of the bachelor..... who was mildly annoyed. Ironically, he would become just as annoyed by the children's aunt and tell a story of his own.
