Jocelyn is a bratty teenager with a rather pessimistic outlook on life. According to her, her life is a living hell. Jocelyn has to attend summer school and spend the waste the largest part of her free time writing essays on ridiculous topics.

Raleigh (What magical realism would be)

Raleigh is Jocelyn’s uncle. He is often described as a kind, patient man.

Bettina (What magical realism would be)

Bettina is Raleigh’s wife. The woman keeps a diary, in which she writes critically about her husband. Bettina’s habit to boss around irritates Jocelyn to no end.

T.G. (What magical realism would be)

T.G. is a boy whom Jocelyn fancies. However, their summer together gets spoiled by his attempt to commit suicide.

Becca (What magical realism would be)

Becca is Jocelyn’s best friend

Angie and Zelda (What magical realism would be)

Angie and Zelda are Jocelyn’s acquaintances.

The protagonist (The Fledgling)

The protagonist is a young woman who saves a bird. However, the author doesn’t add any relevant information about her past. The only thing we know is that she is kind and the sight of the little bird awakes some unpleasant memories from her childhood.

She adores her niece even though they are not blood-related. To her niece and readers’ shock, Aunt Sophie confesses that she is rather ill and her inevitable death is approaching.

Yancey’s owner is an elderly lady. She a widow, a mother, a writer, and a dog owner. Yancey becomes the center of her universe.

Yancey is an elderly dog that fails to understand that she is not young anymore. Just like her owner, she grows weak with every passing day.

The wife is a woman who stays at home whilst her husband is getting ready for yet another business trip. In spite of her complaints – the majority of which are just inside jokes that only they can understand – she loves her husband and prays that his plain doesn’t crash.

The husband is a caring man who tries to provide his family with everything they need. His job requires a lot of traveling.
