Why did so many Hmong flee when offered the choice of resettlement or returning to Laos?

Because they were Hmong, the residents were treated as traitors and abused by the occupying forces. The Vietnamese would kill them for minor offences such as stealing food, and they took away the majority of what they harvested. In 1979, the Lees' infant son died of starvation.
