Who is/are the main character/s?

I've been told at school, where we are currently reading this, that Jan and Ruth are the main characters and I don't doubt it but I was wondering if anybody had any other opinions or any other ideas of who could be the main character/s.

Jan and Ruth would be the protagonists. I don't see another in this role.
