What does the British officer [mark] want, if the children do not find who they are looking for in Switzerland?

I only see mention of the British officer once in the text. Chapter?

A British officer had given them some money for food, but this was soon gone and they had to find work to get more. This was difficult becacuse the factories were closed, and the farms were using the freed prisoners of war. Some villages refused to let the children enter because there was no more food or places ro stay for refugees.
