The Sign of the Four

How does Gatsby and Cody's relationship act as a catalyst for later events in the novel?

I've been issued this "mini essay" question in class and my teacher wants notes on how Gatsby and codys relationship is a catalyst and then how is gatsby a figment of his of his own imagination? We've been given chapter 6 as our main chapter but any other chapter can be added in.

Dan Cody was a mentor to Gatsby when he was young. He made his fortune through the gold rush and actually left Jay some of his fortune, although that fortune was later seized by Cody's ex wife. He showed Gatsby what the good life was like and undoubtedly spurred him to hope to have more in the future. Cody was the catalyst that sparks Gatby's determination not to be ordinary.
