Who or what is positioned to be liked in The Secret River?

As the oldest sibling, William is placed in a position to be liked because of his loyalty to his siblings, his sense of responsibility, and his selflessness. Even when he is encouraged by his master (under whom he is an apprentice), who is also his father-in-law, to steal.... William continues to garner our sympathy. When he is sentenced to transportation, he makes the best of his situation and forges his own future. William is a very easy character to like.
