You need to consider how different Peal was from anyone in the village, including Hester. Hawthorne describes Pearl's spirit as one that transcends mortality. Her spirit is energy, like the energy in the woods and the brooks that she frolics in. I'm not sure how else to explain this.
Just as the natural elements will never pass away, the energy and spirit that Pearl exhibits will always be with us.
