Why does McCarthy have father make a flute?
Why does McCarthy have father make a flute?
The father attempts to make something beautiful. Perhaps he wants to remind the boy that there was once beauty in the world: there was art and there was music. The boy ends up throwing away the flute. This represents the boys understanding that the flute no longer belongs in a world that has lost its humanity. The boy is perhaps the only good force left in the world and even he feels disillusioned.
