The Red Badge of Courage

What is the "inner knowledge" that Henry and Wilson possess regarding their superiors and the esuing battle?

How does this knowledge affect Henry? What does if reveal to him about his superiors? What does he realize about the role of the individual in war?

They understand that the point of the battle is to win and that anyone who is in the battle can be praised for what is being accomplished or sacrificed for what is needed to win the battle at hand. Their inner knowledge is that they may get praised for what has just happened, but they will be thrown back into the war in order to accomplish the goals of the superiors. They do not reveal what they know, because such a thought (of being like a sacrifice) would demoralize the other troops and would affect the mood of everyone fighting.
