At the end of Chapter 6, what is Henry's impression of the general and the officers ? What do you think is the author's opinion of them?

At the end of Chapter Six, Henry is questioning the decisions of his superiors and wishing he could take him to task. In my opinion, I feel the author thinks the troops would be better served if their officers were among them. That is, of course, my opinion. What do you think?
