moderately long description
Physical descriptions of characters are given to us in bits and pieces throughout the novel. In chapter one Steinbeck notes that Juana's eyes made "little reflected stars." She had long black hair, "braided it in two braids and tied the ends with thin green ribbon." Juana is a beautiful woman but she has also lived a hard life,
"Her face was hard and lined and leathery with fatigue and with the tightness with which she fought fatigue. And her wide eyes stared inward on herself. She was as remote and as removed as Heaven."
