Ponyboy is loyal to Greasers and will even fight if called upon. I, however, think Pony is a hero because of his empathy and love of books. At one point in the story, Ponyboy reflects on how Cherry Valance, a Soc, sees the same sunsets as he does. He wonders if perhaps they are not so different after all,

It seemed funny to me that the sunset she saw from her patio and the one I saw from the back steps was the same one. Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren't so different. We saw the same sunset".40

Ponyboy also reads Gone with the Wind to Johnny in the empty church in Windrixville. It is a book that connects Johnny and Ponyboy.
