Ponyboy resisted having his hair cut. Why, do you think, did the Greasers place such high value on their hair?

One of the ways the Greaser's defined themselves was by their long unkempt hair. It was a part of their look, in the same way the leather jacket was. Cutiing their hair made the boys different.... it took away a part of their identity.
