Jounny was traumatized by being beat up by the socs. As Pony tells Cherry in chapter 2,

His white T-shirt was splattered with blood. I just stood there, trembling with sudden cold. I thought he might be dead; surely nobody could be beaten like that and live.

Johnny was the least violent boy of the gang yet always carried a switchblade with him after the attack.
