How do you know that it will take Ponyboy quite a long time to get over the death of Johnny?

We know that it will take Ponyboy a long time to get over Johnny's death because he can't even deal with the reality of what really happened. Johnny will need to be able to admit the truth, accept Johnny's death, and then take time to heal and grieve the loss of a friend.
