The sharks come to do what sharks do and that is eat the great fish that Santiago has caught. The old man personifies the animals around him and the sharks are no exception. Santiago sees them as enemy scavengers coming to steal his great Marlin. The sharks are not worthy to take of his magnificent fish and Santiago's pain is not only the physical loss of the Marlin but the loss of it's honour and majesty.
