The Namesake (novel and film) describes the struggles and hardships of a Bengali couple who immigrate to the United States to form a life outside of everything they are accustomed to. It was directed by Mira Nair and is based upon the novel of the same name by Jhumpa Lahiri, who appeared in the movie. Sooni Taraporevala adapted the novel to a screenplay. Having such a strong Indian presence in the making of this film certainly gives us a sense of ethnocentric authenticity.
