What type of mood is established at the beginning of the story?

In the opening scene, there is a sense of warm contentment as a warm fire burns on a cold night. Mr. White and his son play chess and Mrs. White knits. The mood , however, changes with the arrival of Sergeant-Major Morris. The mood quickly turns dark, foreboding, and surreal.
