At the beginning of the story
The story opens with a comment about chess and radical changes. Mr. White takes unnecessary and foolish chances in the game, in the same way he makes deadly decisions and takes risks while wishing on the monkey's paw. The most radical mistake, of course, being the death of Herbert, his only son.
