Why can’t Thomas become a Runner right away? Why is ORDER so important to the Gladers?

Before Thomas can become a runner, he must prove himself to the rest of the Gladers. Once he has proved himself, he must receive a recommendation from the Keepers for the position. Order is important to the Gladers because it keeps them alive. Everyone has to be willing to work and function in all aspects of the Glade..... even the worst scenarios. It is a team effort.
