What is the "changing" the people of the Glade talk about?

What is the "changing" the people of the Glade talk about?

I haven’t read the whole book so sorry if the answer’s in there but what exactly is the changing? Does the changing change the victim into a griever or what?

The "changing" only comes about after a Glader is stung by a Griever. The "Changing" makes the Gladers lose their minds.... become vicious and violent, even commit murder. It can only be stopped with the serum, and without the serum.... they will die.
