What happened to his potato crops

Using human waste as fertilizer, he plants some potatoes from his storeroom and nurtures them to maturity, with the intention of subsisting on microwaved potatoes after his freeze-dried rations run out. I believe that all the plants/potatoes were dead from lack of oxygen and sub freezing temperature. The bacteria in the poop soil as well.
