The Marrow Thieves

Why does the following citation describe the importance of memories and the past?

“Out here the stars were perforations revealing the bleached skeleton of the universe through a collection of tiny holes. And surrounded by these silent trees, beside a calming fire, I watched the bones dance.”p.9

In context, memories and the past are retained in nature..... the trees, the skies, the stars..... and the dreams.
