The Marrow Thieves

What message does author Dimaline sending about Canada’s original residential schools and the impact they had on survivors?

Miig explains the nature of the residential school system by saying, “We go to the schools and they leach the dreams from where our ancestors hid them, in the honeycombs of slushy marrow buried in our bones. And us? We join our ancestors, hoping we left enough dreams behind for the next generation to stumble across.”

Why do you think Dimaline chose to write about the schools stealing dreams from Aboriginal people?

These schools literally stole the dreams of young children. The "schools" were hellish places where countless aboriginal children were stripped of their identity, used and abused. The future of these children were stolen along with any dreams they might have had. I think the actual stealing of dreams is more than just a metaphor.
