The Marrow Thieves is a coming-of-age novel that explores the themes of adolescence, adulthood, and more specifically, manhood. French has an outdated idea of manhood, in which he is the protector, provider, and hero. Coming-to stories are part of a personal mythology for each character. These stories are a part of what Dr. Joseph Campbell called The Hero's Journey. These stories infuse meaning into people's lives. They give direction and purpose.
