The Marrow Thieves

In page 115, Tree and Zheegwon told the group a scary story about the Windiigo people which is a monster that eats human flesh and even their own children. Why did the author put this allusion in the book? And what does it symbolize in the story?

The story is about monsters who destroys balance of nature, and disrupts the ability for life to exist. This a metaphor of what is happening in Frenchie's world. People have destroyed the environment: an act that is tantamount to what happened to the Windiigo people.
