Miigwans is a middle-aged Anishnaabe man, and the leader of the group. He is called Miig for short. Miig escaped the schools but lost his half-Cree husband, Isaac, there. He guides and teaches the youngsters about their history and present, as well as how to survive in the wilderness. At the end of the novel, he reunites with Isaac.Frenchie finds a sense of personal and cultural identity through Miig. Miig teaches Frenchie about what exactly is lost and the reasons that Frenchie is fighting for.
