Miig grows on Frenchie. In the absence of his family, Miig takes the place of an elder and a teacher. Miig escaped the schools but lost his half-Cree husband, Isaac, there. He guides and teaches the youngsters about their history and present, as well as how to survive in the wilderness. Frenchie absorbs these teachings and adopts some of the patience and gentle teachings of Miig.
