At the end of the first chapter, after Frenchie is found he breaks down sobbing. Why do you think he is crying?

Frenchie has an encounter with a large moose. He is in a position to kill the animal, which would provide them with food for a week as well as hide for tarps, blankets, and ponchos. But he ultimately decides not to, since they would have to leave at least half of the meat behind to rot. I think Frenchie is touched by the moose yet he also has a responsibility to his people.
