Why ritual started and for what purpose?

The Old Man says "Lottery in June, Corn be heavy soon." This hearkens to the time when primitive societies sacrificed someone to appease the gods of the harvest. It is a kind of custom back to the most ancient times when beliefs in gods such as the Greek gods required such behavior.
