Why is it difficult to change traditional rituals?

Some people follow tradition and rituals because they always have. In this case the townspeople do not really critique the ritual. On some level the lottery gives meaning to their life. Rituals in general are part of the human psyche. They work as part of a mythical conscious to help them make sense of their world. Not following them creates a sense of lost identity and loss of purpose.
