Why do the villagers participate in the lottery every year?

Old Man warner mentions an old motto they used to have, "Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon." This statement is really our only trace to a reason for the lottery. It would seem that it was some sort of sacrifice to cause the crops (corn) grow better.
