Why are these people holding a lottery like this ? Most important why does everybody go along with it ?

The lottery is held because it is a tradition. The lottery was initially a ritual..... a sacrifice given to insure a good harvest. Tradition and superstition have left the community complacent..... they continue to accept the tradition without basis and conform to societal expectations.
