Although the story sounds like a tale of warm rural life, there is a subtext of unrest. In the first paragraph, for example, the boys are collecting rocks for reasons we are not told, Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones. Successive paragraphs give the feeling of increased uneasiness and tension. Furtive looks and the hurried pace of the narrative give the sense of fear and anticipation.
