The reader usually begins the story believing they are present for a village celebration..... the town is gathered, everyone is waiting for the big moment, and most everyone seems to be relaxed and prepared for a good time. We don't really become aware of the true reason for the lottery until the Hutchinsons are singled out and Tess reacts.
