Lessons from The Lorax: Consumerism and Thneeds, Part II

Source(s)

Consumers are initially brought into ‘The Lorax’ by the Once-ler, who starts selling Thneeds, which he calls a'superb item’ that can be used in various ways. In the beginning, the Once-ler works alone, but when he introduces Thneeds to the population, he quickly understands that there is money to be made. The first customer is brought in when the Once-ler gets a knock at his door from a passer-by who is curious about the Thneed. This customer energetically indicating that they want to purchase the product leads the Once-ler to increase the level of production. He calls his family to assist him in producing the Thneed faster, thus implying that its sales are on the rise among consumers. The I’m-A-Thneed customers introduced in the film help in revealing the two main problems of consumerism and destructive utilization of natural resources. With the increase in demand for Thneeds, the Once-ler becomes more reckless in polluting the environment, thus culminating in the disappearance of the Truffula trees and the effects observed by the Lorax.
