Baba gives Hassan plastic surgery to fix his cleft lip. Amir is shocked at this extravagant gift for a servant: Amir is also jealous. The surgery went well and Hassan could finally smile an unbroken smile. Ironically, Amir explains, it was soon after that Hassan stopped smiling for good.
