Why does Marija refuse to leave the brothel when she has the chance?

In Chapter 31, we learn that Jurgis visits Marija after getting a new job. He tells her that since he has work, she can leave the brothel. Marija, however, tells Jurgis that she will never leave. She is addicted to morphine and cannot find another job in the city because she will be found out to be a whore. Jurgis sees that she wants him to leave, so he does.
