Lindo refuses to acknowledge that her daughter isn't living the life she had planned for her. She looks right past Waverly's happiness, her desire to marry, and her living situation. She wants Waverly to act in the way she expects her to act, and to rigidly observe Chinese customs. Lindo is controlling, and she is selfish. All of these tthings contribute to the great chasm between them.
