Why do you think Arthur Conan Doyle did not make Sherlock the narrator of the story?

Watson provides a sense of distance between the events and the protagonist. Watson is often more grounded than Holmes and able to control his emotions better This makes him a more reliable narrator who has as much information as the protagonist.
