Why did sherlock holmes need seclusion and solitude?

I think that Holmes is frustrated. Holmes is upset that Mortimer did not call him immediately, since clues have obviously been erased in the interim. Mortimer counters that the case might be beyond Holmes's abilities, since it features supernatural elements.
