Watson often serves as Holme's foil. Watson's obtuseness highlights Holme's talent for making deductions.
Dr. Watson is an opposite of Holmes. Holme's has an ignorance for human social behavior, whereas Watson doesn't, so Watson often helps Holmes in this aspect. Watson is not considered to be a genius like Holmes so Holmes is often explaining his deductions to Watson.
