Does Sherlock take advantage of Watson in hound of the baskervilles?

Holmes lies to watson saying he cant come to solve the investigation and tells watson he can do it. Turns out holmes was there in a hut the whole time solving it. Was watson's role completely useless? Does sherlock take advantage?
