Why does gandalf choose bilbo?

Bilbo was different than other hobbits, and Gandalph could see he had the qualities necessary to be a hero. Bilbo was also a Took (Fallohide), whose ancestors had once been friendly wth the elves...... something that would eventually come in handy.
