He then finds a slimy, disgusting creature named Gollum. Gollum makes a promise to show Bilbo the way out if he can answer riddles that they share back and forth. If Bilbo wins, then he will be shown the way out. If Gollum wins, then Bilbo (though he doesn't know this) will get eaten (Gollum loves raw flesh). This is really the introduction to the power the ring has over Gollum and potentially Bilbo later on in the narrative.
